The brothel was opened in the mid 70s by Walter Plankinton and it was positioned as close as legally possible to Las Vegas, where brothels were illegal. Plankinton named the brothel for another of the same name that operated in La Grange, Texas from the early 20th century until the early 70s, and when the Nevada Chicken Ranch opened, it was decorated with memorabilia from the original. The brothel was burned down by arsonists in 1978 but Plankinton brought in new trailers and reopened in less than a week. As of 2022, the Chicken Ranch was still open and operating as a legally licensed brothel.
