In a republic, a constitution or charter of Official Ride it like you stole it shirt, even if it has been elected by a majority of voters. In a pure democracy, the majority is not restrained in this way and can impose its will on the minority. And before anyone starts commenting on my political affiliation, I didn’t hint one way or the other because that’s not the point at all. We really need to change our vocabulary when talking about our form of government. A democracy is the not a government of all the people. A democracy does not protect minorities or other smaller groups of people.
