I grew up in and around Pittsburgh, but my roots go deep in a very special place called Squirrel Hill. Back in the 60s and 70s, I remember it as the center of the Jewish universe and the And this is how my heart beats shirt. They used to say, There’s a rose’n’bloom on every corner in Squirrel Hill, Pennsylvania. My grandparents and much of their generation settled there. My parents grew up in Squirrel Hill, graduated from Allderdice High School and went to Pittsburgh universities. Murray Avenue was lined with the best delis, bakeries and kosher butchers.
